Australian L1 and L2 Cycling Coaching Course – 18 – 23 June 2018

In June we hosted an intensive 6-day Level 1 and Level 2 Cycling Coaching Course presented by Cycling Australia’s Greg Meyland and Donna Rae Szalinski.

16 delegates including prominent cycling personalities, professional riders and several Development coaches attended the course and are now eligible for certification as CSA Level 2 coaches.

The programme covered a broad range of specialised cycling topics suitable for any cycling discipline from a theoretical and practical perspectives.

Level 1

Level 1 covered an introduction to the various coaching styles and methodologies including risk assessment, bike set ups and an introduction to Sports Science and Group Management. This was followed by a practical session at the Hector Norris cycle track in Joh’burg South on Day 2.

Level 2

Level 2 delved deeper into more advanced anatomy and physiology including advanced bike set ups and equipment, and a two-day study of the components/structure of training programmes. The principles of periodisation, strength training and conditioning were unpacked in detail, as well as recovery and nutrition.

The course also covered other practical aspects governing the success of the athlete/coach relationship – personal excellence, continued coaching development and training, athlete psychology and communication, amongst others.

The final day entailed a practical assessment of field testing, and endurance conditioning for road or track cycling, as well as discussions on practical delivery, planning and review.

PTS Coach are committed to the development of our coaches to benefit our athletes and will continue to offer professional training courses and accreditation in future.

PTS Coach paired with Central Gauteng Cycling at the Hector Norris cycle track for a fun-filled Saturday morning nurturing our future cycling talent.

From the basic track markings to the rules and regulations of racing, coach Jeremy Maartens and assistant coach Bennie Moqumo taught the kids various fundamental track cycling skills including how to ride predictably, how and when to drop down (without crashing!), bunch riding, slip-streaming and pacelining

Each child had the opportunity to ride their own bike to increase their confidence and skills and even test a track bike – without brakes!

The day ended with three exciting races for the newbies to pit their newfound skills and speed against their counterparts on the track.

Ladies Learn2Ride – Women’s Day 9 August

Our inaugural Ladies Learn2Ride day on Women’s Day had to be postponed due to galeforce winds in Johannesburg. Not deterred by Mother Nature, our bevvy of beauties joined PTS Coach Steve Saunders the following Saturday for a morning of biking and bonding.

Coaches Steve, a former Pro cyclist and JP van Tonder, an accomplished track cyclist and Time Trial champion, taught the ladies the insiders’ tricks of the track. From basic bike handling skills to super competence in bunch riding, slipstreaming and pacelining, our peleton of ladies practised pursuiting, sprinting and riding in close quarters just like the Pro’s!

Don’t miss our next PTS Event and train like a Pro at the VIP Training Camp at Hippo Hollow in September.
